Community Involvement

The communities we serve grow more diverse every day. At SUNY Downstate, you'll learn your craft in one of the world's most diverse communities.

Every program at SUNY Downstate has close ties to the Flatbush community. That means you'll see firsthand how equitable health care can change the world. Downstate is home to more than 100 volunteer service projects. Each provides rich opportunities for faculty, staff and students to connect with others.

Because our expertise is so wide-ranging, we draw from a deep well of talent when we confront community challenges. For example, the student-run Brooklyn Free Clinic brings together volunteers from our College of Medicine, School of Health Professions, College of Nursing, and School of Public Health to conduct health screenings and provide care. In the Downstate Dialysis Sidekicks Program, students keep company with young patients as they endure the day-long procedure. And as we mentor high school students we bring together students in every discipline, proving STEM careers are within reach.
