Our Mission

To build and sustain faculty vitality and development through the implementation of educational and professional activities that advance the academic missions of teaching, research, and clinical care.

Researcher Training Workshops and Programs

These offerings provide training in how to navigate the approaches for conducting clinical and laboratory research and obtain the funding necessary to do so.  For more information and additional programs, please see Research

  • Navigating the IRB
    • To assist in the development of IRB protocols, the IRB website (research.downstate.edu/irb) provides a number of template protocols, from which faculty can choose to best fit their project. Additionally, faculty and trainees are welcome to attend IRB meeting(s) as guests to get an understanding of how the committee and its processes work. Such insider knowledge can be invaluable in helping faculty and trainees develop as clinical researchers.
  • How to become a successful investigator
    • Conversations led by senior faculty to share their career trajectory, their research area and why they chose that area, strategies for obtaining funding, and general tips for success in academic health sciences research.
  • Grant Writing
    • The Office of the SVP for Research recognizes that developing competitive extramural grant proposals is central to becoming a successful academic researcher. To that end, the Office has put in place two activities to help faculty develop into successful grant writers:
    • The office pays the registration fee (approximately $100) for any interested faculty to participate in the annual SUNY “Writing Winning NIH Grant Proposals” workshop, which focuses on practical, conceptual and rhetorical aspects of writing a grant. In August 2020, thirty-eight Downstate faculty participated in this two-day virtual workshop presented by Dr. John Robertson, Managing Member of “Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops”. Day one covered general grant writing strategies for NIH applications, while day two dealt with renewal and re-submission proposals and writing techniques.
    • “Grant-Writing Consultancy Initiative” provides faculty access to grant-writing consultancy services (paid by the Office of the SVP for Research). The services offered range from copy editing to full in-depth (i.e., 2 to 3 month engagement) consultation on development, editing, and grantsmanship of applications. We view these services as critical to helping our faculty by providing that extra help pushing their applications over the funding threshold and enabling them to grow their research programs.
