Downstate’s Health Informatics Program is gaining recognition through national academic leadership and international scholarship.

Mohammad A. Faysel, Ph.D., FAMIA, Chair and Associate Professor of Health Informatics in the School of Health Professions, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), the national accrediting body for health informatics and health information management programs.

His three-year term begins in January 2027. Dr. Faysel currently serves on CAHIIM’s Health Informatics Accreditation Council, which evaluates academic programs and recommends accreditation decisions.

His contributions also extend to international education. Dr. Faysel is one of four editors of Introductory Textbook in Health Informatics, published by Springer Nature in 2026. The 368-page volume addresses health information systems, electronic health records, data science, clinical decision-making, information security, and artificial intelligence.

The editorial team is also collaborating with educators in South Korea and Yonsei University Press on a Korean-language edition, expanding access to the material for an international audience.

Dr. Faysel, who joined Downstate in 2014, leads the University’s Health Informatics Program and conducts research involving clinical informatics, health disparities, telehealth, mobile health technologies, and workforce development.

His accomplishments contribute to Downstate’s visibility in a field that is increasingly central to the delivery, management, and improvement of healthcare.
