New Leadership for Downstate Faculty Practice

I am delighted to welcome Daniel Castillo, MHA, FACHE, FACMPE, as Executive Director of University Physicians of Brooklyn and Associate Dean for Faculty Practice Affairs, bringing more than 26 years of healthcare leadership to the University.
University Physicians of Brooklyn, now operating as Downstate Health Physicians, represents approximately 300 physicians across 17 clinical departments and numerous specialties and subspecialties. The faculty practice connects patient care with the research and teaching missions of Brooklyn’s only academic medical center.
Dan will lead its operations and strengthen the systems that support physicians’ clinical and academic work. He has led academic medical centers, public health systems, physician enterprises, health plans, and consulting organizations. His previous roles include Health System Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Tulane University School of Medicine, Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles General Medical Center, and President and Chief Operating Officer of Aligned Telehealth.
Throughout his career, Dan has overseen organizations with budgets exceeding $1.6 billion and has led hospital affiliations, organizational integrations, physician practice growth, population health initiatives, and operational transformation. That experience will support Downstate’s work to expand access, improve the patient experience, and help faculty deliver coordinated care across specialties.
Dan is also an educator and is an adjunct professor of healthcare administration at Tulane University’s Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He also currently teaches Healthcare Operations in Downstate’s Master of Healthcare Administration program, where his students benefit from lessons grounded in the day-to-day realities of leading complex healthcare organizations.
Dan earned a Master of Health Administration and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Medical Practice Executives.
