By Office of the President | Mar 31, 2026
Congratulations to Jeffrey Birnbaum, M.D., MPH, Executive Director of the HEAT Program and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and
Public Health, who was recently named a recipient of a Fulbright Specialist Program
award from the U.S. Department of State.
Dr. Birnbaum joins an exceptional group of national scholars selected to advance international collaboration through academic exchange. His selection reflects sustained excellence in public and global health, as well as a demonstrated ability to build partnerships that extend the reach of academic medicine beyond national borders. He joins over 400 U.S. citizens who share their expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program each year.
The Fulbright Specialist Program identifies leaders whose work bridges research, education, and practice. Recipients are selected based on academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their ability to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the United States and abroad.
During his career, Dr. Birnbaum has advanced global health education, strengthened community-based public health initiatives, and mentored students and trainees who carry this work into practice. His approach reflects a consistent focus on equity, access, and the application of public health principles in real-world settings.
As part of this award, Dr. Birnbaum will lead a project at Charles University in the Czech Republic focused on public and global health. This engagement will support training initiatives, deepen knowledge exchange, and strengthen institutional partnerships that benefit both academic communities and the populations they serve.
This recognition builds on a broader record of impact that led to Dr. Birnbaum being honored as a 2025 Schneps Media Healthcare Hero. That distinction reflects sustained leadership in public health, education, and community engagement, work that has shaped programs, informed practice, and strengthened the health workforce.
Dr. Birnbaum’s achievement underscores Downstate’s role as a center for academic distinction and global engagement in public health. It reflects an ongoing commitment to preparing leaders who address complex health challenges through collaboration, innovation, and service.
The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, operates in more than 160 countries and has supported more than 400,000 participants across disciplines. Dr. Birnbaum’s selection places him within a global network of scholars committed to advancing knowledge and improving health outcomes worldwide.
