Chancellor King Visits Downstate
By Office of the President | Mar 3, 2026

We recently welcomed Chancellor John B. King, Jr., and Trustee Cesar Perales to Downstate for a campus visit focused on our academic, clinical, and strategic priorities.
The Chancellor and Trustee Perales met with members of our academic and clinical leadership teams to discuss enrollment, workforce development, research growth, hospital modernization, and our ongoing commitment to serving Central Brooklyn. These conversations reinforced Downstate’s critical role as Brooklyn’s only academic medical center and as a vital engine of opportunity and health equity in our borough.
During the visit, they toured University Hospital at Downstate, including our newly renovated Labor and Delivery Suites at Nursing Station 32, which highlighted our investment in modern, patient-centered maternity care and our commitment to providing high-quality services close to home for the families of Central Brooklyn.
The Chancellor also met with a select group of students who shared how their education at Downstate prepares them for today’s healthcare workforce. Their reflections underscored the strength of our clinical training model and the depth of our mission-driven academic programs.
In advance of the Governor’s announcement awarding the first contract for demolition of the existing garage, the Chancellor and Trustee Perales visited the future site of the new ambulatory care center. This milestone marks an essential step in modernizing our campus and expanding access to high-quality outpatient care.
The visit affirmed the strong partnership between Downstate and SUNY leadership as we continue to advance academic excellence, expand access to care, and invest in the future of healthcare in Central Brooklyn.
