Finding Strength in Unity and Purpose this Thanksgiving

A Message from President Riley
Dear Downstate Community,
As Thanksgiving approaches, I find myself reflecting on the strength found in unity and shared purpose, especially in a world that feels increasingly complex. This season challenges us to come together, realign our values, and reaffirm the guiding principles that shape us as educators, healers, and advocates within our community.
At Downstate, we carry a profound responsibility—not only to teach and practice medicine but to embody our core values: empathy, inclusion, respect, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in care. Just as we strive to uplift and heal each patient, we are called to support and uplift each other, drawing strength from our diversity and resilience from our shared purpose. This is what we teach, this is what we practice, and this is how we live.
Thanksgiving offers a moment to pause and appreciate what truly matters—the families and friendships that enrich our lives, the patients and communities we serve, and our shared dedication to caring, teaching, and learning. It reminds us of the significance of standing together to nurture a spirit of understanding and respect that defines us as a community, even when our perspectives differ.
As we gather with loved ones this season, may we carry forward the spirit of gratitude and unity. Let us continue to inspire each other, grow in compassion, and find strength in our shared mission. I am profoundly grateful for each of you—for your resilience, dedication, and the care you bring to our work and to one another.
Wishing you all a Thanksgiving filled with peace, togetherness, and the joy of a community
that continually lifts each other up.
