Pathology Reports and AI: Dr. Steimetz Highlights Need for Human Oversight in MedPage Today Feature

photo of Dr. SteimetzCongratulations to Eric Steimetz, M.D., MPH, PGY3 Pathology Chief Resident, for being featured in MedPage Today, the widely read online newsletter for healthcare professionals. Dr. Steimetz’s recent study, published in JAMA Network Open, explores the potential of AI chatbots like Google’s Bard and OpenAI’s GPT-4 in interpreting pathology reports.

While GPT-4 was relatively accurate, other AI sources introduced medical mistakes, unwarranted inferences about a patient’s condition, and AI “hallucinations,” making it clear that AI technology still requires clinician oversight. Dr. Steimetz’s study underscores the importance of human expertise in healthcare.
