Advancing Medical Nutrition Education

Mariana Markell

Mariana Markell, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of Kidney Transplantation, recently launched a publication titled “Essentials of Nutrition in Medicine and Healthcare: A Practical Guide,” co-edited with Dr. Sumantra (Shumone) Ray. Published by Elsevier, this handbook revolutionizes our understanding of the role nutrition plays in managing and preventing disease.

The handbook seamlessly integrates medical nutrition theory into daily clinical practice, making it accessible to doctors, students, and healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds. It aims to address the significant gap in medical nutrition education, prevalent in medical, nursing, and physician assistant schools, as well as graduate medical and public health programs. Despite the critical role nutrition plays in managing various health conditions, there is a noticeable absence of nutrition education in these fields. This concise yet comprehensive handbook takes a step toward bridging that educational void.

Markells Book

The collaboration between co-editor Dr. Ray, an internationally renowned figure in food, nutrition, and health and Director of the Need for Nutrition Education/Innovation Programme (NNEdPro) Global Institute in Cambridge, UK, and Dr. Markell, who also co-authored the chapter on Hypertension and Kidney Disease, has allowed the book to reach a broad international audience. The book’s ultimate goal is to contribute to the enhancement of nutrition education not only worldwide but also within the United States.
