President Riley Discusses Maternal Health Disparities at Brooklyn Law School Roundtable

Maternal HealthPresident Wayne J. Riley, M.D., MPH, MBA, MACP, participated as a panelist in the "Call to Action on Maternal Health Disparities Roundtable." The event, held at Brooklyn Law School on December 1, 2023, featured a diverse group of hosts and panelists. Notable attendees included Assemblymembers Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn and Chantel Jackson; City Councilmember Rita Joseph; and Public Advocate Jumanne Williams. Additionally, representatives from the NAACP, the Department of Health, various nonprofit organizations, and several Brooklyn hospitals contributed to the discussions.


Department of Human Resources Launches New Buddy Orientation Program

The Department of Human Resources has successfully launched the Buddy Program for New Employee Orientation (NEO) on January 4, 2024! For those who have not heard, the Buddy Program pairs existing SUNY Downstate employees with new hires during their New Employee Orientation with the aim of improving the onboarding experience and overall introduction to Downstate.

We would like to thank the buddies who participated in the launch of this program for their dedication and support, which played a crucial role in making the orientation experience positive and enriching for our newest team members. The Buddys were willing to share their insights, answer questions, and provide guidance. They truly exemplify the spirit of our collaborative and welcoming work environment.

Being a buddy is a voluntary role.

Alumni Association Supports Downstate's Food Pantry with #GivingTuesday Campaign Success

As part of its #GivingTuesday campaign, the Alumni Association for the College of Medicine raised enough funds to secure eight months of support for Downstate’s Food Pantry. This initiative, launched as part of SUNY’s efforts to combat student hunger, will greatly benefit from the association's successful fundraising.


Downstate Community Actively Commemorates 35th Annual World AIDS Day

Members of the Downstate community were highly engaged in commemorating Annual World AIDS Day. Downstate’s HEAT (Health and Education Alternatives for Teens) Program received an award at the New York City Health Department’s World AIDS Day event from Dr. Michelle Morse, Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Commissioner for the Health Department’s Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness. Additionally, Downstate’s Student Center Governing Board displayed panels of the Names Project Memorial Quilt in the Atrium, a tradition now in its 26th year. Notably, an Arthur Ashe panel was included, highlighting his affiliation with Downstate.


Annual Toy Drive Delivers Joy to Pediatric Patients

Shoutout to the Departments of Pediatrics held their Annual Dr. Madu Rao Toy Giveaway on Friday, December 22, 2023. Many of the adorable children at the event thoroughly enjoyed it as they opened up their gifts and were also visited by Santa Claus, along with other special guests. Many thanks to the whole Pediatrics Team for planning this event each year and putting smiles on the faces of children in our community.
