Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Honor Medical Society Welcomes More than 40 New Members

Congratulations to the 43 members of the College of Medicine Class of ’23 recent inductees to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Honor Medical Society—Eta Chapter of New York. The SUNY Downstate Eta Chapter is committed to recognizing the work and achievement of our diverse student body.

The selection committee, comprised of faculty who themselves are AΩA members, used a holistic review process to select students who met national and local criteria, including academic achievement, professionalism, leadership capabilities, adherence to ethical standards, and a record of service to the school and the community we serve. Guiding our local chapter are Jason M. Lazar, M.D., MPH, Professor and Vice Dean for Education in the College of Medicine, who serves as AΩA Councilor; Richard Sadovsky, M.D., Professor of Family and Community Medicine, who serves as Secretary/Treasurer, and Sandra Mingo, College of Medicine Coordinator and AΩA Administrator.

Following tradition, the group will conduct service projects in our community. Internal activities will include panels and activities aimed at helping medical students prepare for the academic and professional issues faced during their medical education. Community activities will consist of student leadership in supporting health fairs, patient education activities, support of a pathway to medicine programs, and active support of University Hospital of Downstate outreach.

The new AΩA student group also elected Sierrah Grigsby as President, Alana Engelbrecht as Vice-President, and Madeline D’Agostino as Secretary/Treasurer.

Election to AΩA is a distinction that will accompany members throughout their medical careers.
