Background and Expertise:

Dr. Dersu is an American board certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained glaucoma specialist. She was the director of glaucoma service and inaugural recipient of John Nutt Endowed Chair at the University of Arkansas, where she worked for 8 years before joining SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2013. She specializes in medical and surgical treatment of all types of glaucoma in addition to performing cataract surgery. A recipient of American Glaucoma Society led Patient Care Improvement Project award, her goal is to provide high quality patient centered care by using the latest available technology. She is involved in resident and medical student teaching at both Kings County Hospital and VA New York Healthcare System.

Research Interests:
  • Investigating the barriers in detection and successful treatment of glaucoma in the African American and Caribbean Population

  • Improving medication adherence

  • Patient’s perspective on outcome after laser and other surgical intervention
