Dr. Rio O'Mary, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, where she serves as a faculty member in the Special Treatment and Research (STAR) Program. With a strong focus on health equity, Dr. O'Mary's clinical expertise spans HIV prevention and treatment, LGBTQ+ healthcare, substance use treatment, and women's health. She is deeply committed to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care that addresses the unique needs of diverse populations.
Dr. O'Mary earned her Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Rice University, graduating with distinction for her senior thesis. She went on to receive her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai before completing her Family Medicine residency at SUNY Downstate, where she also served as Chief Resident.
Board-certified in Family Medicine, Dr. O'Mary holds HIV Specialist certification from the American Academy of HIV Medicine. Her passion for medical education and mentorship is evident in her role as Faculty Advisor for the Family Medicine Interest Group and her involvement in the LGBTQIA+ Health Pathway for medical students.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. O'Mary is an active contributor to quality improvement and research. Her current projects include advancing sexual orientation and gender identity data collection in healthcare settings and improving diabetes management in the STAR Clinic.
