Sabina Hirshfield, PhD
Visiting Associate Professor
Division of Infectious Diseases
STAR Program / Department of Medicine
Dr. Hirshfield is a visiting Associate Professor in the STAR Program, Department of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Her innovative approaches to online and self-sampling strategies have significantly advanced scientific understanding and contributed to the development of complex interventions aimed at improving the health and well-being of sexual and gender minority populations.
With over 20 years of experience, she has led or collaborated on eHealth and mHealth interventions grounded in behavioral theory to model health behaviors among sexual minority men (SMM) with and without HIV. Her current projects focus on achieving sustained viral suppression among newly diagnosed SMM living with HIV through HemaSpot dried blood spot collection and lab testing for viral load monitoring. Additionally, she is conducting self-sampling research in urine-based drug checking to measure drug analytes in response to the individual and intertwining opioid and methamphetamine overdose epidemics.
Dr. Hirshfield received her undergraduate degree from SUNY Binghamton, her Master's from St. Johns University, and her doctorate from Columbia University.
