Joel Gernsheimer, MD, FACEP

Dr. Gernsheimer, MD, FACEP graduated from Brooklyn College. He earned his Medical Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx in 1973. Dr. Gernsheimer completed his training in Internal Medicine at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. He then became certified in Emergency Medicine via the Practice Route. He is currently Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.

Dr. Gernsheimer also served as the Emergency Services Director, Emergency Medicine Program Director and President of the Medical Board at Lincoln Hospital. He has been at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Center and Kings County Hospital Medical Center since 2007. He has been teaching Residents, Nurses, Medical Students, Physician Assistants and Physician Assistant Students since 1973 at Lincoln Hospital and since 2007 at Downstate and Kings County Medical Center. Dr. Gernsheimer is currently a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Downstate. In addition to being Senior Faculty at both Downstate and Kings County Hospital (KCH), he is also the Director of the Division of Geriatric Emergency Medicine at both institutions.

Dr. Gernsheimer has received many awards for both his clinical service and his teaching, including Hero of Emergency Medicine from American College of Emergency Physicians, the Gold Humanism Award and Teacher of the Year. He has given many Emergency Medicine lectures, including Grand Rounds at multiple institutions in the Metropolitan area and Internationally in the Philippines, Haiti, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. In recent years, he has been very interested in Geriatric Emergency Medicine Topics, including falls in older patients, adverse drug reactions in older patients, and infections in older patients.
