Pia Daniel MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, the Medical Director of Emergency Preparedness, and Chair of Workplace Violence Committee at SUNY Downstate. Dr. Daniel completed her Emergency Medicine residency and Emergency Preparedness Fellowship at University Hospital at Downstate, New York. Dr. Daniel completed her Master’s in Public Health at Columbia University, with a focus across three areas of expertise: organizational leadership and management, health policy and public health, and health systems.
Dr Daniel developed a niche in Disaster Preparedness and Response, combining her MD and MPH degrees to promote the integration of clinical response and public health policy in disaster readiness. Dr. Daniel serves on the New York City Health Care Coalition Leadership Council Governance Board, working with the NYC Department of Health to support NY’s health care system preparedness and response to disasters.
Dr. Daniel served as Chair of Board of Directors for The American College of Academic International Medicine, working to promote public health programs globally. Dr. Daniel has helped develop multiple disaster drills including adult mass casualty incidents and pediatric hospital evacuations for hospitals and disaster coalitions in the NYC area. She has worked with NYC Department of Health on developing and testing policies related to Disaster Response.
Dr. Daniel lead a Disaster Response team to help the relief efforts for the Puerto Rico 2017 Hurricanes. Dr. Daniel has organized disaster preparedness seminars for medical conferences in India, Sri Lanka and Qatar. Dr. Daniel has published on disaster response and training; she has presented her research at multiple international conferences, including IPRED in Israel, INDUS EM in India and WADEM in South Africa. Dr. Daniel completed medical school at UMDNJ Rutgers in New Jersey and an undergraduate degree at NYU, NY.
Dr. Daniel’s work with disaster preparedness at this facility and with city/state agencies is an asset to the Medical Executive Committee to promote the facility’s safe disaster responses for both employees and patients. Dr. Daniel helps the committee ensure up-to-date trainings for all departments and give input on policies related to disaster medicine, workplace violence, and city-wide disaster response coordination.
