Cynthia L. Benson, DO, FACEP, MPH, MBA, is the Interim Medical Director and Director of Quality for the University Hospital at Downstate Emergency Department. Dr. Benson is Board-certified in Emergency Medicine and is a highly respected clinician, educator, and hospital leader with over 15 years of experience improving care delivery in high-volume academic and community settings.
As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Benson is committed to resident and medical student education and frequently speaks on quality improvement, clinical decision-making, and professional development. She has held key administrative roles at Northwell Health and Overlook Hospital (Atlantic Health System), leading innovations in emergency department operations, patient flow, quality metrics, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Dr. Benson earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and holds dual master’s degrees: an MPH from Nova Southeastern University and an Executive MBA from Wagner College. She completed her residency and chief residency at SUNY Downstate/King’s County Hospital Center. Her leadership is marked by a results-driven, collaborative approach and a passion for advancing patient-centered emergency care.
