Dr. Markell is Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program. Her research interests are far ranging and include metabolic disease after transplantation, women's health in kidney disease, nutrition in chronic disease and integrative medicine, having served as the Director of Integrative Medicine at the Northwell system. She did her Internal Medicine Residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital followed by a Research Nephrology Fellowship there. Her clinical Nephrology Fellowship was completed at UCLA Medical Center. She has been named to NY's Best Doctors every year since 1999, and NY Times Super Doctor since 2007.
She also has an interest in medical education both at the medical school and the graduate level, having been awarded Teacher of the Year as well as being the recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award by the Medical Students. She created the first Transplant Medicine Fellowship in NYC which has trained many of the leaders in kidney transplantation today and was responsible for creating one of the pre-clinical units for the medical school curriculum focused on GI, Endocrine and Reproductive Medicine. She has been awarded millions of dollars in research grants and is widely published with hundreds of scientific Abstracts and papers, as well as books, including her most recently published book focusing on nutrition for health care professionals, which was released in 2024.
