Joanne Ritter-Teitel, PhD MA RN

Background and Expertise:

Dr. Ritter-Teitel is a nationally recognized leader in nursing. She began her career at NYU Medical Center where she first practiced as a medical-surgical nurse and incrementally moved into the position of Head Nurse of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. During her time at NYU, she worked with Dr. Margaret McClure (co-author of the Magnet Study), and developed an interest in clinical practice models After completing a her MA degree, she was recruited to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital as the Director of Critical Care Service.  In 2001, she earned her Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania, where she was mentored by Dr. Marge Sovie (another Magnet author).

Dr. Ritter-Teitel’s research has focused on the predictive value of professional nursing attributes on achieving patient outcomes.  Her work has been informed by experience with Ernst and Young and Care Management Science and in a Johnson and Johnson Nurse Executive Fellowship at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.  She has served as Chief Nursing Officer at Montefiore Medical Center, Orange Regional Medical Center, and most recently at University Hospital of Brooklyn.

Dr. Ritter-Teitel has served as a guest editor for JONA and as President for the New York Organization of Nurse Executives and Leaders (NYONEL). Her board certification is in Advanced Executive Nursing Practice.
