As Associate Dean for Educational Development and Chair of the State of the Art Committee, Dr. Volkert is responsible for ensuring that the Downstate Integrated Pathways Curriculum is continuously updated to take advantage of learning strategies supported by best evidence as this changes over time. He is particularly involved in promoting high-quality implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Team-Based Learning (TBL). As Faculty Accreditation Lead, he promotes institutional awareness of current accreditation standards and organizes administrative and faculty activities that examine and improve Downstate's adherence to standards. As Chair of the Academic Promotions Committee, he organizes the College faculty's oversight of student promotions and graduation in accordance with their adopted academic standards. Dr. Volkert has had a long career as a medical school teacher and course director, has been a Scholar-in-Residence of the American Society for Microbiology and a Faculty Fellow of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and is a member of the Team-Based Learning Collaborative.
