Save the Date: April 2nd, 2024. More details to come.

American Association of Neurological Surgeons at Downstate

The Downstate chapter of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons is led by medical students with a strong interest in advancing neurosurgical education, research, and advocacy.

Downstate AANS members are pursuing global health research on stroke, participating in brain tumor research, and helped to organize the inaugural Downstate Global Neuroscience Initiative symposium on Advancing Health Equity held on May 31, 2023. We have hosted several panels on the neurosurgery residency application process, featuring neurosurgery faculty and students who successfully matched! Service-learning events like the Neurocharity softball tournament or the American Brain Tumor Association 5K are focused on supporting neurosurgery research.

We regularly host journal club and suture clinic workshops led by neurosurgery faculty or students. Plans are in the works for craniectomy and laminectomy drill skills workshops that offer medical students the opportunity to learn more from local neurosurgeons about anatomical landmarks and key surgical concepts, while gaining familiarity with using tools of the operating room.
