At Downstate, wellness is a core part of supporting the people who care for others. As noted in the May 2025 President’s Bulletin feature, The Science of Stillness,” skills such as pausing, breathing, and refocusing are increasingly recognized as practical tools in medicine, not a departure from clinical practice.

Residents, fellows, faculty and staff from the Pediatrics Department recently participated in a 90-minute Wellness and Well-Being session led by Carla Liberatore, M.D., Assistant Dean of Wellness for the College of Medicine. The session focused on techniques to support calm, focus, and connection in demanding clinical environments.

The session began with grounding and relaxation techniques, including breathwork and a guided body scan. Participants learned simple practices designed to be used throughout the workday, such as between patient visits, during transitions, or in moments of stress. Emphasis was placed on approaches that are accessible and easy to apply in real time at work and at home.

Breathwork was followed by gentle movement, with options for seated or standing participation. Using a moving meditation approach grounded in yoga, participants practiced techniques designed to release tension and enhance focus within short periods of time.

The group also reviewed basic mindfulness practices and discussed how brief moments of awareness can help maintain steadiness during busy schedules. The session concluded with a seated sound bath, where participants closed their eyes, creating a calm environment that supported relaxation and reset.

Sessions like this reflect Downstate’s broader approach to wellness, integrating practical, evidence-informed tools that support resilience and focus. By offering structured opportunities for growth and development, Downstate continues to invest in the well-being and effectiveness of its workforce.

Thank you to Christina Guillén, M.D., Interim Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, for her insight into how well-being and wellness are critical components of the healthcare professionals’ toolkit and how they care for their young patients.
