We celebrate the completion of a four-year, $10 million investment to modernize the air handling systems at University Hospital at Downstate (UHD), an achievement that enhances patient safety, strengthens staff well-being, and positions the hospital for continued growth.

The project replaced five aging rooftop units that relied on outdated refrigerants with state-of-the-art systems that use environmentally responsible alternatives. These new systems provide expanded airflow capacity, creating flexibility to support future hospital expansion and the evolving needs of patient care.

Key among the upgrades is the integration of Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) technology, which inactivates airborne pathogens and provides stronger protection against infectious diseases. This innovation is particularly impactful in critical spaces such as operating rooms, where clean air directly contributes to better outcomes and reduces the spread of airborne illnesses throughout the hospital.

The upgrades could mean fewer hospital-acquired infections and faster recovery times for patients. For staff, they translate to healthier, safer working environments with reduced exposure to irritants and airborne illnesses.

UHD remained fully operational while the project undertook carefully sequenced phases, with temporary air handlers installed to maintain uninterrupted service in vital areas such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and MRI suites.

This milestone reflects the dedication and expertise of Downstate’s Facilities Management team, whose strategic planning and careful execution delivered a modernized air system that ensures cleaner, safer air for our patients and healthcare professionals.
