Marching Forward: Celebrating Match Day, Women’s History, and Healthcare Awareness
By Office of the President | Feb 25, 2025
Dear Downstate Community,
As March is just around the corner, I want to acknowledge some important milestones and events that showcase the dedication, resilience, and impact of our students, faculty, and staff.
One of the most anticipated days for graduating medical students is Match Day, a pivotal moment when they learn about their residency placements. Over 200 Downstate students participated last year, with approximately 75 percent remaining in New York State for their residencies. Another 31 students chose to continue their training at Downstate.
We look forward to celebrating another successful Match Day as our students take the next step in their medical careers, strengthening our mission to train top healthcare professionals.
March is also Women’s History Month, when we proudly acknowledge women’s contributions to medicine, science, and society. Women have played an essential role in shaping the future of health sciences, from pioneering discoveries to advancing healthcare equity.
I proudly acknowledge the women of Downstate who make an impact every day, ensuring that our patients, students, and communities receive the best care and education possible.
We also recognize Social Work Month, honoring social workers’ invaluable role in healthcare and numerous societal landscapes through advocacy, compassion, and expertise, helping bridge healthcare gaps, supporting patients and families through complex challenges, and improving public health outcomes. Thank you to the University Hospital at Downstate teams of social workers for your ongoing commitment to our Brooklyn community.
Health awareness remains a priority, and March also highlights the importance of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Kidney Health Month. Preventive screenings, early detection, and community education are crucial in combating these conditions.
I encourage you to prioritize your and your family’s health and take advantage of the care offered at our Family Health Center at 253 Empire Boulevard—a key part of our #KeepCareClose mission.
Let us continue to uplift one another, advance our shared mission, and make a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
