Childhood obesity is a growing public health concern with serious long-term consequences, including an increased risk of early cardiovascular disease. At Downstate, researchers are working to better understand how rare genetic factors contribute to obesity and vascular health in children. Their groundbreaking work aims to refine diagnostic methods and expand treatment possibilities, offering new hope for children affected by severe obesity.
In a recent study published in Endocrines, Vivian L. Chin, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology, and former resident Ilham Farhat, M.D., explored the role of rare genetic variants in pediatric obesity. Between 2021 and 2024, they conducted a comprehensive genetic screening of 54 children with severe obesity (BMI ≥ 97 percent). Their findings revealed that most children carried genetic variants linked to obesity, underscoring the importance of early screening in guiding clinical care.
To examine how these genetic variants might impact cardiovascular health, the research team used EndoPAT®. This non-invasive diagnostic tool measures blood vessel function. Their pilot data suggest a potential link between specific genetic variants and vascular health. However, further research is needed to validate these findings. Expanding this study could lead to more precise treatment strategies and better long-term health outcomes for children with severe obesity.
As one of the few institutions actively integrating genetic screening into pediatric obesity care, Downstate is leading the way in personalized medicine. Identifying genetic variants associated with obesity can help physicians make informed treatment decisions, especially as new therapies that target specific genetic conditions emerge.
This work also highlights the vital role of academic medical institutions in addressing complex health challenges. Through innovative research and hands-on patient care, Downstate continues to provide essential services to the community while making valuable contributions to the broader field of obesity treatment.
