College of Nursing Dean Appointed to CCNE Board

Lori Escallier, Ph.D., RN, CPNP-PC, FAAN, College of Nursing dean and professor, was elected as Board Vice Chair of The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Dr. Escallier’s election was announced at the September CCNE Board Meeting. All officers are elected to one-year terms and may be re-elected to office for a second term.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Chair and Professor Camille A. Clare, M.D., MPH, FACOG, was one of the key speakers at Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement of a second round of funding to expand further access to safe abortion services in New York State.


Addressing Opioids and Harm at Regional Meeting of Council of State Governments-East

CON Professor and Brooklyn Initiative to Develop Geriatrics Education (BRIDGE) director Shirley Girouard, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, organized a plenary session on Opioids and Harm: States Act at the Council of State Governments-East 61st Annual Meeting and Regional Policy Forum. The panel discussed opioid deaths, approaches to harm reduction, and overdose prevention centers. CON Family Nurse Practitioner 2022 graduate Carol Wei, RN, MS, FNP, led the discussion. 


Downstate Resident Appointed Associate Editor of American Journal of Psychiatry Residents

Psychiatry Resident Rafik Sidaros, MBBCH, has been appointed as one of five associate editors of the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents. The resident-run, peer-reviewed publication celebrated its tenth-year last month.

Kate, Jennifer, and Wendy were Year I nurses in their Nurse Residency program when they conducted this EBP project in 2020 at their hot-zone facility, Coney Island Hospital, where they in-serviced over a hundred staff together amid a COVID. As a result, the staff ended the year strong with a facility reduction of hospital-acquired pressure injuries from six percent to three percent through the prophylactic application of foam dressings.
