Laparoscopic, or minimally invasive surgery, is a surgical service that we provide for a wide variety of conditions across specialties. We also offer minimally-invasive donor nephrectomies for renal transplants from relative donors, and for laparoscopic anti-reflux procedures. Downstate Health also provides advanced, robotic, minimally-invasive procedures for specific diagnoses.
Vascular Surgery Services
We provide comprehensive care for patients with narrowing of arteries that may progressively worsen and lead to leg pain, gangrene, or limb loss. Amputation is the end result of chronic limb threatening ischemia, a condition of extensive arterial stenosis or occlusion of arteries of the leg due to atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease that sometimes may progress for years without causing any symptoms. The amputation prevention (also known as limb salvage) program at the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Downstate Health Sciences University is committed to improving the care of patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia. This multidisciplinary team consists of specialists in vascular surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, infectious diseases, endocrinology, physical therapy, and wound care that work closely together to deliver expert care. We use state-of-the art imaging and techniques to diagnose, treat, and follow-up our patients after intervention to preserve limb function and mobility and minimize major amputations. Our physicians are adept in the latest minimally invasive and open vascular reconstructions
The aortic surgery program of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and University Hospital at Downstate provides treatment for patients with aortic aneurysms, aortic dissections, or aortic occlusive disease. We use state-of-the art imaging equipment with 3-dimensional reconstruction capabilities to diagnose, treat, and follow up our patients after intervention. We bring together a network of dedicated vascular specialists, internists, cardiologists, radiologists, and numerous ancillary faculty to provide comprehensive vascular care. As part of Department of Surgery at Downstate, we are at the forefront of research into the causes, treatments, and prevention of aortic disease.
Carotid artery disease occurs when the blood vessels in the neck that carry blood to the brain become narrow or blocked. People with untreated blockages are at higher risk of the plaque traveling to the brain and causing a stroke. To prevent stroke, carotid endarterectomy is most commonly offered, and for select patients, stent placement can be performed. We work closely with neurologists to ensure proper care of patients with carotid artery disease.
Chronic venous insufficiency of the legs can lead to the development of swollen, blue, bulging, twisted veins of the leg close to the skin. These varicose veins are not usually life threatening, but may cause heaviness, pain, and discomfort of the leg. Sometimes they can even be associated with ulcers at or above the ankle. We offer minimally invasive treatments to reduce pain and swelling of the leg. Venous thromboembolism can place patients at risk of pulmonary embolism or stroke. We offer minimally invasive treatments including venous thrombectomy, venous stenting, and IVC filter/retrieval. A multidisciplinary team is involved in the care of all patients with pulmonary embolism to ensure optimal diagnosis, management, and follow-up.
The Vascular ultrasound laboratory is a specialized diagnostic facility to help doctors test and diagnose patients with vascular conditions. Staffed by highly-trained vascular technicians and doctors, the Non-invasive Vascular Lab is accredited by Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). The vascular laboratory's purpose is to serve health care providers and their patients by utilizing advanced, noninvasive, diagnostic, medical ultrasound technology while ensuring high quality patient care and attention to quality assurance.
