October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

SUNY Downstate supports survivors of domestic violence and continues its efforts to educate and bring awareness about those who suffer in these situations.

An average of 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute, resulting in more than 10 million abuse victims annually. We stand in solidarity during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to continue making progress in reducing domestic violence. Statistics indicate that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence (e.g., beating, burning, strangling) by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
