Dipaloke Banik, MD

Dr. Dipaloke Banik is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and a Geriatric Psychiatrist at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. His work combines the clinical care of older adults with medical education, graduate medical education, and scholarship focused on cognitive and neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Banik earned his medical degree from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, University of Dhaka, in Bangladesh. He completed his Adult Psychiatry residency at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in New York, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. He subsequently completed a clinical and research fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and remained at the institution as a faculty member.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Banik serves as an Assistant Program Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship. He is actively involved in undergraduate medical education as a facilitator for clinical skills (CS) and problem-based learning (PBL) sessions and delivers psychiatry lectures to medical students during their clinical clerkship. Through these roles, he is committed to creating an engaging learning environment and supporting the professional development of medical students, residents, and fellows.

His clinical and academic interests include Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, neurodegenerative disorders, comprehensive cognitive assessment, neuropsychiatric symptoms in older adults, and the application of neuroimaging and biomarkers in cognitive evaluation. He has also received specialized training in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) at the University of Pittsburgh and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at Duke University.

Dr. Banik is dedicated to advancing compassionate, evidence-based, and culturally responsive care for older adults. His professional mission is to integrate clinical practice, education, and research to improve the cognitive and physical outcomes of older adults with neurodegenerative disorders and other primary psychiatric conditions and to support the families who care for them.
