Dr. Stephen Wadowski is Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics since 2016, Professor of Pediatrics and Interim Director of Pediatric Pulmonology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. A leader in medical education, Dr. Wadowski previously served as Pediatrics Residency Director for 15 years and then Designated Institutional Official responsible for all of SUNY Downstate's graduate medical education programs for 8 years.

Dr. Wadowski has a long record of active engagement in institutional leadership and administration including having previously also served as Director of Pediatric Critical Care at Kings County Hospital and at University Hospital of Brooklyn. He completed his medical education at SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine where he was awarded his MD Degree, Cum Laude in 1987 and was inducted into the AOA National Honor Medical Society. Dr. Wadowski completed his specialty training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonary Disease at SUNY Downstate University Hospital of Brooklyn and Kings County Hospital as well as one year fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Columbia-Presbyterian.

Dr. Wadowski has received numerous honors and awards. Dr. Wadowski is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and of the American Thoracic Society among others. He is well published and is interested in a wide range of medical conditions particularly those affecting respiratory health of children in urban and disadvantaged environments to whom he has dedicated his career.

His clinical interests include children’s respiratory disorders such as asthma, sleep disordered breathing and disorders of respiratory control, congenital and persistent perinatal lung disorders, airway disorders, serious respiratory infections, pulmonary function testing and cardio-pulmonary interactions. His academic interests include asthma, pulmonary inflammatory disorders, lung development and pulmonary physiology, pediatric medical education and pediatric health system performance and quality.
