Meseret Tena, MD, MPH , FAAP

Clinical Assistant Professor
Department of Pediatrics

Dr. Tena is a dedicated and passionate general pediatrician. She knew that she was called to be a pediatrician at young age and she stayed true to her calling. As a mother of young children herself, Dr. Tena knows first-hand the struggles parents go through in this day and age. Dr. Tena did her medical training in Ethiopia and transitioned to New York for further training . After completion of her residency and chief residency in Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, she practiced 2 years in a Private Practice. Dr. Tena's desire to teach and train future health care providers made her return back to SUNY Downstate Medical Center as a Clinical Assistant professor in the Division of General Pediatrics in 2013. She started out as a full time Attending Physician in the resident continuity clinic and after 3 years she took responsibility as Medical Director of the clinic .

Dr. Tena cares for children of all ages (newborn, toddlers, school age, adolescents and young adults to age of 21). Dr. Tena believes in the holistic approach of patient care and always addresses social determinants of health at every visit. She focuses on preventative care and she is a strong advocate for timely screening for children's physical, mental and dental issues. Dr. Tena also believes that clinical work should be informed by public health practices that led her to pursue a Masters in Public Health degree over the past few years. Though she cares about every patient deeply, Dr. Tena has a special place in her heart for children and parents of children with developmental disabilities, especially autism. Dr. Tena is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of American Academy of pediatrics.
