Simon S. Rabinowitz, MD, PhD

Vice Chairman of Pediatrics
Clinical Professor
Department of Pediatrics

Dr. Simon Rabinowitz joined Downstate Health Sciences University in 1987 when he founded the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition which has served the inner city of Brooklyn since then. Dr Rabinowitz has been listed in every edition of Castle and Connolly's Best New York Doctors including the upcoming 2025 edition.

As his reputation spread to families throughout the city and the area, additional children came to the center, enhancing the experience of Downstate's students and residents. Shortly after his arrival at Downstate, Dr. Rabinowitz founded a fellowship training program in Pediatric Gastroenterology here, it among the first to receive accreditation in the US from the ACGME.

Dr. Rabinowitz has not only provided state of the art care to the children in Brooklyn, but his insights have resulted in published manuscripts on necrotizing enterocolitis in premature NICU infants, the gastrointestinal manifestations of children with AIDS, the otolaryngologic complications of children with gastroesophageal reflux, viral hepatitis in end stage renal disease children, a new type of genetic liver disease, nutritional issues in developmentally disabled children, Hirschsprung disease, H. pylori gastritis, and most recently endoscopic analyses of eosinophilic esophagitis in children.  He has also prepared articles for Medscape, the online information resource for doctors associated with WebMD, on feeding issues leading to failure to thrive, vitamin deficiencies, Meckel Diverticulum, and abdominal examination in children.

Dr. Rabinowitz specializes in second opinions in any child with GI, liver, or pancreas symptoms or with growth faltering.
