Director, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program
Interim Medical Director for NICU
Professor of Pediatrics
I am currently a Visiting Professor of Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (where I joined in December 2021), and the Director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program. I have been involved with several multicenter trials since 1996 while a full-time academic faculty at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, then at Westchester Medical Center including site co-PI at SUNY Stony Brook for: the “Early non-tidal vs. tidal ventilation study in very low birth weight infants”, site PI for the NHLBI Study: Low dose inhaled nitric oxide for prevention and treatment of chronic lung disease in the preterm infant as well as the site PI for the NEWNO trial. I am also involved in other clinical research, experimental design and analysis activities in the fellowship training program.
I am board certified in neonatal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics and I am a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and the Subspecialty Board of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. I have contributed to more than 200 publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, books and chapters of books, and abstracts. My passions include helping to improve the health of newborns and mothers in Latin America through volunteer work and education. I have many years of experience promoting the concept of family-centered care in the NICU (in the US and all-over Latin America), including opening our NICU for 24/7 family visiting as soon as I became chief. I continue pursuits advancing support for parents in the NICU, educating every healthcare worker in our NICU about the importance of having parents appropriately educated and supported while their babies are under our care. This project aligns perfectly well with my philosophy and practice.
