Department of Family and Community Medicine
In February 1997, the Department of Family Medicine welcomed to its faculty Downstate alumnus Dr. Sanford Herman (Class of 1983). Dr. Herman is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with additional Board certification in both Addiction Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. He provides patient care, teaching, precepting, and mentoring in the area of Human Behavior to the Family Medicine residents and students.
Before returning to SUNY Downstate, Dr. Herman had been associated with the Mt. Sinai Medical Center beginning in 1988 where he completed a fellowship in Substance Abuse and the Neuro-Psychiatric Aspects of AIDS. In 1989, Dr. Herman established the Schizophrenia Research Unit at Elmhurst where he participated in several drug trials including Risperidol. In 1992, still under the Mt. Sinai umbrella, Dr. Herman moved on to Queens Hospital, where his duties included opening a new inpatient psychiatric unit as well as a new outpatient community-based clinic. In between, Dr. Herman has also gained expertise in Emergency Psychiatry by virtue of many sleepless nights spent working in the Psychiatric Emergency Room.
