Residency Program Director, Department of Family & Community Medicine
Associate Professor of Family Medicine
SUNY Downstate College of Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University welcomed Margaret Donat, M.D., to its faculty in December 2002 as an Assistant Professor. Her initial responsibilities included serving as the pre-doctoral coordinator and course director for the Family Practice Clerkship, as well as Medical Director of the Family Practice Center (Suite B) at Downstate. In June 2005, Dr. Donat transitioned from these roles to become the Residency Program Director. In recognition of her dedication and contributions, she was promoted to Associate Professor of Family Medicine in 2016 and was honored that same year as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Medicine. She later left Downstate to join the residency program at Northwell in Bay Shore and simultaneously opened a small private practice. After several years, she returned to her alma mater in May 2025 to serve once again as Residency Program Director.

Dr. Donat first distinguished herself during her training in the Family Medicine Residency Program at SUNY Downstate and subsequently completed a fellowship in faculty development and women’s health. She is an active member of multiple professional organizations and has received numerous honors and awards. For the past fourteen years, she has served as president of the Kings County chapter of the NYSAAFP.

Despite her demanding professional commitments, Dr. Donat has consistently devoted time to organizing and participating in health fairs, research initiatives, and rescue missions that serve underserved communities.
