Dr. Karen Broomes-James is an experienced nurse educator, registered nurse and nurse leader.  She is an Associate Professor of Nursing at SUNY Downstate, College of Nursing and currently practices as Director of Nursing Education for an organization in the Tri-state area. Dr. Broomes-James holds certifications in Nursing Professional Development, Critical Care Nursing, Stroke Care and Progressive Care Nursing. She has a passion for nursing professional development and helping new nurses enter the profession and overcome challenges, transition to nursing practice and become empowered patient advocates.Dr. Broomes-James was motivated to become a nurse after she received exemplary care from nurses during a brief period of illness.  It has always been her dream to touch the lives of patients and caregivers as nurses touched her life many years ago.  Her background in banking, customer service and finance aligns well with the nursing profession and has fueled her desire to provide a caring touch, excellent nursing care and outstanding patient experiences.   Throughout her career, Dr. Broomes-James has served as a mentor, clinical instructor, and curriculum developer, translating complex clinical concepts into accessible, engaging learning experiences. Her passion for lifelong learning and professional growth is reflected in her work designing continuing education programs, leading simulation-based training, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
