Program Requirements
The 12 credits required for your Advanced Certificate are listed below. This Program of Study reflects the curricular requirements listed on the College of Nursing website. Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the website, the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Student Handbook and the individual program student manual.
The Advanced Certificate in Nursing Education is offered as a hybrid, 12-credit program designed to prepare Registered Nurses with masters or doctoral degrees for educational roles in community organizations and academic settings. The program provides specialized nursing education knowledge and skills in the theoretical and scientific foundations of teaching and learning; the design of evidence-based curricula; assessment and evaluation; and, interprofessional education and technology. Students will have the opportunity to participate in planned practice experiences in both the academic and clinical settings. Students will be prepared to become leaders and change agents within nursing education and practice. For more information, please refer to the requirements listed on the College of Nursing website.
The four nursing courses for the certificate are identified below. Course 1 and 2 are to be taken in Summer Session II. Course 3 and 4 are to be taken in the Fall.
Courses Required
Course 1: NRMS 5210
Course Title: Theoretical & Scientific Bases of Nursing Education & the Educator Role
Credits: 3 credits
Course Description: This course provides a theoretical and scientific foundation for teaching and learning within the evolving health care system and nursing education. Through self-assessment, students will gain an understanding of how different styles influences teaching and learning, The competency, knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the educator to function in various roles in different settings will be discussed.
Course 2: NRMS 5211
Course Title: Designing Evidence-Based, Transformational, Integrated Curricula
Credits: 3 credits: Two didactic credits and one clinical credit (45 hours)
Course Description: This course provides theoretical and scientific bases for designing curricula responsive to changes in health and healthcare. Students will design a specific clinically focused curriculum proposal for current or future work settings that include curriculum design, conceptual framework, instructional resources, program plans, and outcomes. A model syllabus for one component of the curriculum will be constructed.
Pre-requisites: A master's degree in nursing OR currently enrolled in a SUNY Downstate College of Nursing advanced practice program; master's level courses in pathophysiology, pharmacology and advanced health assessment.
Course 3: NRMS 5212
Course Title: Facilitating Student Learning: Strategies & Methods
Credits: 3 credits: Two didactic credits and one clinical credit (45 hours)
Course Description: Provides opportunities for in-depth exploration and the application of innovative, evidence-based teaching/learning strategies to prepare nurse educators to teach in a complex , diverse, rapidly changing practice environment. Student will learn and practice best methods for classroom, clinical and on-line education. In addition, they will practice techniques for advising, mentoring and managing the classroom and clinical experiences, and explore legal and policy issues effecting nursing education. Opportunities will be provided to assess learners' knowledge, skills and attitudes.
Course 4: NRMS 5213
Course Title: Assessment and Evaluation: From Individual to Program
Credits: 3 credits: Two didactic credits and one clinical credit (45 hours)
Course Description: Theories and conceptual models for evaluating student learning, faculty teaching, courses and programs will be explored. Models, guidelines, and practical approaches will be used to develop an assessment strategy for quality improvement in a nursing education program that emphasize competency in clinical practice. Students will conduct a program evaluation.
