Basic and Clinical Research

The Department of Ophthalmology has outstanding facilities available for basic science and clinical research and treatment, all featuring state-of-the-art modern equipment. At Downstate there are a number of dedicated eye research laboratories in addition to other labs, where eye and other areas of cell biology research are being conducted simultaneously. Our new animal facility is complete houses a research suite for imaging ocular tissues.Vision research on our campus is supported by the National Eye Institute, and other public and private funding agencies.

Our large residency training program and faculty practice allows us the ability to examine a very diverse group of patients with the entire spectrum of eye disease. This allows us to perform clinical studies, and in addition, should give us an unprecedented opportunity to bring translational science to future clinical application.

SUNY Eye Institute – Brooklyn

Vision researchers at SUNY Downstate Medical Center are a multidisciplinary group of cell, molecular and developmental biologists, as well as clinical scientists. We join the research efforts across departmental boundries – ophthalmology, cell biology, neurology and pediatrics – forming a cohesive collaborative that address the clinical needs of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Our investigators include faculty, residents, medical and graduate students who meet regularly to discuss their work as well as that of others. We are proud to serve as co-founders of the SUNY Eye Institute (SEI), a state-wide consortium of the vision researchers from the four SUNY medical schools and the SUNY College of Optometry. Through the SEI, we are providing statewide leadership in translational vision research.
