Adult Reconstruction/Total Joint Service

The adult reconstruction service is the premier total joint replacement service in Brooklyn. Specializing in the total joint replacement of the hip & knee, our services include both new implants and the removal or replacement of first generation joint prostheses. Our reconstruction service is the tertiary referral service for patients requiring complex reconstructions for advanced arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, renal disease, sickle cell anemia and lupus as well as patients requiring revisions for loosening, fractures or infection, utilizing state of the art implants or allograft reconstructions. As the only academic reconstruction service in the borough we also provide services for patients with avascular necrosis, tumors and periprosthetic fractures. The Director of the Adult Reconstruction/Total Joint Service is Aditya Maheshwari, MD, who provides care with Qais Naziri, MD.

Foot and Ankle Service

The Foot and Ankle Service is a unique multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons and non-surgical podiatrists specializing in biomechanical and nonsurgical treatment options. We provide complete evaluation and diagnosis, as well as both surgical and non-surgical treatment for individuals with a variety of foot and ankle problems, including athletic injuries, fractures, arthritis, and deformities. Our comprehensive team specializes in all foot and ankle problems including ankle replacement, diabetic foot treatment, foot and ankle reconstruction, post-traumatic ankle reconstruction, rheumatoid reconstruction, plantar fasciitis and vascular necrosis. The Director of the Foot & Ankle Service is Jaime Uribe, MD. The service also offers podiatry care through, Suzanne Braun, DPM.

Hand and Upper Extremity Service

We provide comprehensive upper extremity care, wherein our physicians address disorders of the adult and pediatric hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Surgeons strive to treat the individual patient using all available treatment modalities including surgery when it is the appropriate choice. Our hand specialist on the service is Jennifer Hashem, MD.

Orthopaedic Oncology

With fewer than 200 orthopaedic oncologists, SUNY Downstate is pleased to offer this specialty to its patients. As part of a multidisciplinary group of physicians, we provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for benign, malignant and metastatic musculoskeletal disease. Specializing in the treatment of pediatric and adult patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas, metastatic disease, and benign tumors of bone and soft tissue; limb sparing surgery and innovative methods of endoprosthetic reconstruction; the use of cryosurgery in the treatment of bone tumors; and minimally invasive methods of biopsy and tumor ablation. The Director of the Orthopaedic Oncology Service is Aditya Maheshwari, MD.

Orthopaedic Trauma Service

The Orthopaedic Trauma Service provides acute trauma care as well as consultative and support services to patients with multiple injuries, including complicated fractures, poly trauma, malunion, non-union, pelvic fractures, and soft tissue injuries. The trauma service is led by Ishaq Ibrahim, MD.

Pediatric Orthopaedic Service

We provide orthopaedic care for children from infancy to adolescence. This includes treatment of congenital and developmental disabilities such as hip dislocation, congenital anomalies and major neuromuscular problems, including cerebral palsy and spina bifida. Treatment is also provided for children with skeletal growth abnormalities as well as congenital foot abnormalities such as club foot and flat feet. Procedures such as limb reconstructions, limb lengthening, muscle or tendon transfers, acetabular reconstruction, clubfoot surgery and the management of spinal deformities are offered. The Director of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Service is Khalid Hesham, MD, who treats patients along with Christopher Chapman, MD.

 

 

Spine Service

Our spine service is uniquely qualified to handle the surgical treatment of spinal disorders using the latest microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques. The spine service provides treatment for infections, tumors, traumatic injuries (fractures/dislocations) and degenerative diseases (spinal stenosis, disc disease, herniated discs) of the adult spine. We treat disorders of the cervical and lumbar spine resulting in upper and/or lower extremity radiculopathy, neurogenic myopathies and myelopathic conditions. Our patient population encompasses children as well as adult patients, providing expertise in the treatment of congenital problems, spinal curvatures (scoliosis/kyphosis) and neuromuscular spine deformities. The Chief of the Spine Service is Carl Paulino, MD who is joined by Jad Bou Monsef, MD.

Sports Medicine Service

The sports medicine service provides medical and surgical care for sport- and exercise related injuries of athletes. The service focuses on improving athletic performance, while mitigating and preventing injuries, and is led by the department Chair, William Urban, MD.
