Sports Medicine Fellowship

The Sports Medicine Fellowship is part of the Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine

SUNY Downstate Medical Center, located in the heart of Brooklyn and less than 25 minutes by train to Manhattan, can be traced back to the 1860s. It is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn and serves a population of over 2.3 million people.

Program Overview

Our fellowship is designed to provide prospective candidates a 1 year immersion into sports medicine and non-operative musculoskeletal care in the setting of the diverse borough of Brooklyn. The program begins in July and ends in July of the following year. Our unique program is multidisciplinary and offers sports medicine training with physicians in PM&R, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Orthopaedics.

The fellow will participate in a half day of clinic dedicated to their primary specialty and the rest of their time will be spent in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of sports medicine injuries and a vast array of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The fellow's experience will include the following:

  • Event Coverage: Annual Father's Day Rockaway Rugby tournament, New York City Marathon; PSAL (Public School Athletic League) events
  • SUNY Maritime (NCAA Division III) Football coverage; athletic training room injury clinic
  • Brooklyn Tech High school Football coverage; athletic training room injury clinic
  • Diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopic guided spine injections (optional)
  • Monthly rotations with Sports and Pediatric Orthopaedic specialties
  • Coverage in our Concussion Center
  • Teaching opportunities with Downstate medical students and residents
  • Conferences: AMSSM annual conference (including AMSSM pre-conference); journal clubs; radiology musculoskeletal conferences
