A Day of Fun to Support Alzheimer’s

Join us at Korean War Veterans Park (Cadman Plaza E., Cadman Plaza W, Brooklyn, NY 11201) on Sunday, October 29, 2023, for the 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association/New York City Chapter.

Come spend the day with family, friends, and colleagues, and join in a fun way to build camaraderie and meet new people from all areas of our community. It’s an opportunity to get some exercise and raise funds for an important cause. Every dollar helps the Alzheimer's Association provide care and support to those facing Alzheimer's and all other dementias and neurocognitive disorders. Our goal is to raise $30,000 for this year’s Walk!

Here at Downstate, learn about what our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease is doing to fight Alzheimer’s by providing integrated, one-stop care for patients and caregivers.

Spotlight on Our 2023 Summer Youth Employment Program

I want to thank you all for supporting this year’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). The SYEP provides an amazing opportunity for our young members of the community to gain experience and knowledge by working on key projects at this institution.

Many of our participants expressed that it was a joy to work here at Downstate and they especially appreciated the mentorship of our incredible staff. Volunteer Services received feedback from Bay Ridge, Lefferts, and UHD, to name a few.

Below are some comments on SYEP 2023:

Participants’ Comment:

My name is Mingpei Li and I am a SYEP participant interning at Bay Ridge. I am happy to share my experiences here at Bay Ridge, where I've gotten the opportunity to speak to patients, shadow surgeons, and more! I love the environment and teamwork that makes Bay Ridge such a welcoming and warm place to visit. The nurses, doctors, and medical students are all very nice, and hearing their experiences in the medical field has sparked an interest in surgery for me. I've gotten to interact with patients and their families, learn about their procedures, and help guide them through the surgical process. I have also learned a lot about the inner workings of a surgical center through paperwork, as well as understanding all the steps that go into ensuring a patient's safety and wellbeing. I have also been exposed to several kinds of surgery, such as bunion removals, tonsillectomies, meniscus repair surgeries, kidney stone removals, etc. I have also learned about different types of anesthesia and when to use them. I hope to look more into medicine in my future and possibly help many people too!

Supervisor’s Comment:

I wanted to bring to your attention the excellent job our summer youth students have been doing at Lefferts.  Last year, we had Jaden Price who assisted us with administrative duties such as answering phones, scheduling appts, etc., and returned back to Lefferts as a volunteer.  This year we had Sameeha Akther.  We assigned her a project for the archiving of paper charts.  She archived 1,750 paper charts for a total of 50 boxes!  We are in the process of contacting Citi Storage to arrange a pick up.

I wanted to express my admiration for the exceptional student volunteers this year. They have been incredibly accommodating and are truly a remarkable group. I would like to give special recognition to Ms. Alanna Chen, who has been assigned to the Perioperative area. Everyone who has had the pleasure of working with her has nothing but glowing remarks to say. Alanna is a dynamic, intelligent, and caring individual, and any positive adjective you can think of applies to her. She is destined for great things, and I have no doubt that she will achieve all of her goals.

Volunteer Services values your dedication and commitment to SYEP. You have nurtured these participants to help develop a career in healthcare.
