Our Hospital Earns an “A” for Health Equity

University Hospital at Downstate (UHD) received an “A” grade for Health Equity in the 2024-25 Lown Institute Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility, further affirming the hospital’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to our Brooklyn residents. Downstate also ranked #1 in New York State among academic safety-net hospitals and #2 in the nation, highlighting its leadership in healthcare equity.

UHD achieved top marks across several categories, including Community Benefit, Inclusivity, Pay Equity, and Avoiding Overuse—placing it among the leading hospitals in New York State and nationally for its dedication to serving its vibrant and diverse community.

By focusing on fairness, equal access, and high-quality care, we ensure that our diverse communities receive the healthcare they need. We strive to avoid unnecessary treatments, helping lower costs while ensuring patients get the most beneficial care and setting a solid example of responsible and community-focused healthcare.

The Lown Institute Hospitals Index ranking is the only national system that evaluates hospitals on social responsibility metrics, including health equity, community impact, and patient care. More than 3,500 hospitals were analyzed using over 50 data points to provide a holistic view of each institution’s performance. These top rankings reflect our continued dedication to reducing health disparities and ensuring every Brooklyn resident can access world-class healthcare services. Thank you for all that you do and for making us such a great place for our patients to get the care they deserve.

Overcoming Challenges in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

In May 2023, the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory faced a significant challenge when one of the two experienced technologists retired, and the other declared their intent to leave. In response, we launched an exhaustive search for replacements, including contacting our staffing partners. Despite our best efforts, the applicants we received, all of whom were referred, presented two significant challenges: they all demanded salaries above the market rate and they had expectations that we could not fulfill, such as not being on call. Furthermore, none of them possessed the necessary formal training for the position.

This realization was a pivotal moment for us. We researched training programs and identified the necessary skills and competencies for a competent technician. We decided to train our existing staff, including an EKG Associate from the coronary care unit and a Nursing Assistant, with training as a Dialysis Technician in the electrophysiology lab.

With their unwavering dedication, the Critical Care Director, the Assistant Director of Nursing for the Cath Lab, the Director of Nursing Education, and the Critical Care Nurse Educator came together in a collaborative effort to develop a comprehensive training program. The education staff provided training in EKG interpretation and anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulatory system, while the nursing staff and the technologist were responsible for teaching the technical skills related to equipment operation, such as inputting data into the system.

Our new technicians, have completed many cases and can function independently. We have not recorded any interruptions in service, and we continue to provide a vital service to our community. This initiative taught us a valuable lesson. With the right talent, a supportive environment, and a willingness to learn, our staff play a crucial and valued role in providing safe, effective care. Collectively, we will continue to work towards our vision of being the “Best Place to Get Care and the Best Place to Give Care,” with our staff at the heart of our success, inspiring us to reach new heights.

Thank you to our team for your unwavering support and commitment to our vision. Your dedication and hard work have been instrumental in overcoming this challenge and will continue to inspire us as we strive to continue our mission at UHD.
