I wanted to send out a friendly reminder inviting you to join us for the 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Korean War Veterans Park (Cadman Plaza E., Cadman Plaza W, Brooklyn, NY 11201) on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 10 AM.

Come spend the day with your family, friends, and colleagues, and meet new people from all areas of our community. It’s a great opportunity to get some exercise and raise funds for an important cause. Every dollar helps the Alzheimer's Association provide care and support to those facing Alzheimer's, all other dementias, and other neurocognitive disorders. Our goal is to raise $30,000 for this year’s Walk!

Celebrating Our Staff at the Green Belt Poster Fair

On Thursday, September 14, Downstate hosted its inaugural Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Poster Fair and Awards Ceremony. We celebrated the first cohort’s successful completion of this powerful process improvement certification program.

Similar to our WE ACT methodology, Lean Six Sigma is a data-driven method for improving performance by systematically removing waste and reducing variation in processes through collaborative team efforts. Increased performance and decreased process variation can drive error reduction and improvements in operational efficiency, care delivery, employee morale, and economic health.

Over the past year, our Green Belts started 15 projects aimed at improving operations, care delivery, and organizational expense reduction. These projects were showcased to the campus through posters and live presentations.

Our Green Belt Projects included:

  • Increase internal referrals to under-utilized specialty providers
  • Improving Fingerstick Monitoring Compliance on Medical Units
  • Achieve turnaround time of 60 minutes from CT order to CT image acquired, for NON-CONTRAST CTs on ED patients
  • Improving Documentation of Moderate Sedation Administered in TEE
  • Reducing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Improving patient satisfaction related to wait time In the X-Ray Department
  • Improving Nursing Department Overpayments and Late Transactions due to Voluntary Separations
  • Improving Campus Wide UUP NTP Performance Evaluations Compliance Levels
  • Improving the hospital-wide office supply ordering process
  • Streamline the Nursing Department Overtime/Comp-time payment process
  • Improving utilization of telemetry monitoring for adult patients
  • Improving care coordination for external ophthalmology referrals for clinic procedures
  • Improving patient access to outpatient specialists
  • Improving the Stericycle Call Center process

The goal of the Green Belts was to identify areas throughout Downstate that could be improved using the Six Sigma evidence-based approach.  Over four interactive sessions, candidates were introduced to more than 100 process improvement tools and techniques that supported their advancement through the program and gave them skills to tackle complex challenges in our hospital processes.

Participants dedicated a total of 80 hours spread out over six months. They also spent additional time collecting and analyzing data for their independent projects. The outcome was a remarkable return on investment, resulting in over $500k of operational savings and cost avoidance. Furthermore, these savings have the potential to continue growing as the projects are fully implemented and utilized in other areas of the hospital.

The new Green Belts of Downstate are:

  • Kevin Attard
  • Chad Alexander
  • LilyAnn Jeu
  • Cynthia Benson
  • Vikki Small
  • Olatokunboh Osineye
