a Biomedical Engineer, providing medical equipment maintenance and repair for our
facility. Gael holds a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, a Master’s in Medical
Biology, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry.
He was nominated for many reasons. Gael embodies the vision and values of UHD. He
is always available to assist with medical equipment issues and does it with a smile.
He greets everyone on the unit and attends to an issue no matter how many times he
is called. Gael is accountable for his job duties and is truly an excellent Biomedical
Engineer who deserves recognition for providing excellent work and treating all staff
with respect.
August – Denise Lewis, RN
Ms. Denise Lewis has been an employee for 30 years at Downstate. In 2001, she accepted
the position of Breastfeeding Coordinator when the previous Lactation Consultant vacated
the position. Nurse Lewis became an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant
(IBCLC) in 2001 and has maintained her certification, which is required every 5 years.
Denise enjoys her role as an IBCLC, working with mothers/parents to help them achieve
their goal of effective breastfeeding.
Ms. Lewis provides breastfeeding education not only to our patients at UHD but also
to the nursing and physician staff. She plays a significant role in maintaining the
'Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding' in our facility. Denise's extensive knowledge
and ongoing support extend beyond the patients' discharge. She provides breastfeeding
education prenatally to our patients and makes herself available for assistance during
post-op visits and wellness checks. Denise's passion for breastfeeding is evident,
and she shares her knowledge with anyone willing to learn.
September – Sonja Occident, RN
Ms. Sonja Occident started in the OPD in 2006 and floated across all suites in the
outpatient department for about a year before transferring to our Lefferts clinic.
She is honest, reliable, and makes decisions with our patients' best interests in
mind. She has the ability to judge what is right and wrong and acts accordingly.
"As a new ADN in ambulatory services, I have observed Ms. Occident's dedication and
compassion towards her patients. She treats her patients with kindness and respect
and goes above and beyond to accommodate them during their visits. I have also noticed
that she greets everyone with a warm smile and reassures anxious patients. She truly
exemplifies our WE CARE values." - Marie Boursiquot, ADN
