Announcing a New Hematology-Oncology Partnership

A group shot of the Hematology Oncology event participants

We have partnered with Maimonides Health on the launch of a new hematology-oncology partnership that will leverage the strengths of both organizations to expand access to cancer care in Central Brooklyn. Residents in our area, including East Flatbush, Farragut, and Rugby, are disproportionately at risk for common forms of cancer that can be treated if caught early enough.

This partnership will allow patients at Downstate to access a broader range of specialists from the Maimonides Cancer Center. In addition, it will leverage our academic and research capabilities to benefit more patients in the borough. The combined program will create the most extensive hematology-oncology practice in Brooklyn, and we will begin seeing patients immediately.

Under this new Hematology-Oncology collaboration, clinical services and medical education will be provided at both acute care locations. In addition, Kevin Becker, M.D. was named Chief of the newly-formed joint Maimonides-SUNY Downstate College of Medicine’s Division of Hematology-Oncology.

This collaboration is another step in the growing partnership between our two organizations. It is a critical link in meeting the healthcare needs of Brooklyn residents while focusing on some of the borough’s most underserved communities. This crucial partnership seeks to level the playing field for communities where access to quality healthcare can be challenging based on socioeconomic, insurance, poverty, and other factors impacting households.

Employee of the Month for January and February 2023

A portrait of Dr. GuillenJanuary – Christina Guillén, M.D.

Dr. Christina Guillén serves as the Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program and Director of Community Pediatrics at Downstate.

Dr. Guillén graduated from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University College of Medicine, where she stayed to complete her Pediatric residency training and chief resident year. After completing her training, she joined the Department of Pediatrics faculty in 2005. Dr. Guillén’s lifelong ambition had been to serve her Washington Heights community. Still, during her residency, a sense of commitment inspired her to care for the children and families of East Flatbush.

Here is a letter from one of Dr. Guillén’s patients:

My name is Labinia and I am the parent of Aliyah. Aliyah is a patient of Dr. Christina Guillén. I just wanted it to be known that Dr. Guillén is by far the best pediatrician and it is a blessing to have her in our lives. As a health care provider myself, people always tend to say “well it’s their job,” but she does more than that. She goes above and beyond on all levels and has created the best atmosphere for my daughter. Through all the challenges that teenagers encounter, she’s very sympathetic, empathetic, caring, and responsive. She not only listens when I cry, but she provides the best listening ear for my daughter. I can probably go on and on about her since she has been with my daughter since she was born, but I just wanted to express our love for her.

Dr. Guillén has dedicated her career to advocacy and has an immeasurable commitment to addressing health disparities. Dr. Guillén is a proud first-generation Dominican American. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Hispanic Medical Association, and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. Join us in congratulating our January Employee of the Month!
