The UHB Update

News from the University Hospital of Brooklyn | July / August 2021

A Message from David H. Berger, MD, MHCM, FACS
CEO of University Hospital of Brooklyn

dr_david_berger

“As the only health sciences university hospital in Brooklyn, we are devoted to achieving health equity in our communities through provision of outstanding patient care, research, and education.”

Soon after I arrived at University Hospital of Brooklyn, I wanted to establish our “why.” During my focus group sessions and through email, I asked you two questions; Why do you work at UHB? Why is UHB important? The themes I heard were consistent: we care about our community, we are inclusive, we care for a group of patients who have unmet needs, and we train the next generation of healthcare providers. Based on your input we crafted our new mission statement that I have included above. This mission statement is our “Why.”

In addition to developing our “Why”, we have also developed our Vision, or what we want to become—“The best place to get care, the best place to give care.” What this statement means is that we want to be recognized by our patients, staff, community, external rating agencies, and potential referring physicians as having the best outcomes for our patients and providing the highest value care. Additionally, we want to be recognized as the preferred place for our nurses, physicians, technicians, and staff to work.

This is a lofty goal (vision) but one that is obtainable. We have been working diligently to increase staff in areas that are experiencing shortages. We have started a daily safety huddle to identify issues that may prevent us from providing safe care. We have instituted leadership rounds so that our senior team is more connected with the issues facing our frontline workers. We have instituted daily interdisciplinary rounds to ensure our patients needs are met. Importantly, we have installed new processes to ensure proper identification of patients and proper transport of patients in our facility. We will continue to implement processes that will help our caregivers do their jobs and provide safe and effective patient care.

There are three important initiatives beginning that will help us to achieve our vision: 1. Together with Press Ganey, we are beginning our journey toward becoming a highly reliable organization; 2.  We are completing our strategic planning; and 3.  We are beginning our Nurse Magnet Journey.  We will be involving our entire staff in these initiatives. You will continue to hear more about this as the summer progresses.

It has been a long 18 months. We have dealt with the loss of friends, colleagues, and loved ones. We have cared for thousands of critically ill patients under difficult circumstances. I want to acknowledge what you have accomplished and thank you for the exceptional, compassionate care you have provided.

The pandemic appears to be receding; however, there is still the danger of COVID-19 returning. I encourage those of you who haven’t been vaccinated to get vaccinated. The vaccine is over 95% effective in preventing hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

Additionally, I want to encourage everyone to take some time off this summer. Connect with family and friends you have not seen this past year.  Enjoy the outdoors and everything New York has to offer. It has been a while since we have been able to relax and decompress.

Have a great summer!

David

Arnold P. Gold Foundation Honors Our Staff at UHB

gold_foundation

In June, our President, Dr. Riley, received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation National Humanism in Medicine Medal at its annual gala. The gala was a virtual gathering of the Gold community of clinicians, students, healthcare leaders, patients, deans, CEOs and supporters of the human connection in health care. The Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award honors caring and compassionate mentors in medical school education.

Dr. Riley was honored alongside Dr. Anthony Fauci, Chief COVID Advisor to President Biden and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, and Dr. Eric Topol, Founder and Director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute and Executive Vice-President of Scripps Research.

In addition, during this event, the Gold Foundation recognized the contributions of hundreds of healthcare workers for their courage and perseverance during the pandemic, including three members of our staff. Below is a brief description of these individuals and their outstanding accomplishments. Kudos!

rahman_mafuzurMafuzur Rahman, M.D., FACP, Chief Medical Information Officer and Vice Chairman, Department of Medicine

Dr. Rahman has been on the front lines for over a year now as Director of Inpatient Services, including the Hospitalist team. As such, he and his team have been responsible for the majority of COVID-19 patients that have come through our hospital. In the beginning of the pandemic, with limited evidence-based medicine available, Dr. Rahman meticulously collected data on each patient in order to implement the best treatment plan possible for each individual. He had to be innovative and created an algorithm to quickly expand teams to expedite COVID patient care.

Julie EasonJulie Eason, BS, RRT-NPS, Director of Respiratory Therapy

Julie Eason has spent the majority of her career working in underserved communities and safety net hospitals and believes strongly in the mission they serve. During the height of the pandemic, the number of daily intubations and ventilator-dependent patients was unprecedented. Ms. Eason jumped right back into delivering hands-on patient care and was tireless in her efforts to juggle that along with managing the strain on her staff and her constant pursuit to ensure an adequate supply of ventilators and related equipment.

rahman_mafuzurFlorence Vieira Hinds, RN, MSN, CNS, FNP, CDE, Clinical Nurse Specialist

Florence Vieira Hinds was exceptional in the care she provided to our patients during the pandemic. She found ways to deliver care without compromising herself, colleagues, or the patients through innovative techniques such as using IV extension sets to deliver infusions and locating IV pumps outside of patients’ rooms. This reduced exposure to the virus. She worked diligently and with compassion, and still found time daily to communicate with families. She is one of our many heroes of the pandemic.

Adoration from our Patients in the Community

A photo of letters from patients

We would like to let everyone at the hospital know that you are all doing a fantastic job in this time of need. We understand that throughout the pandemic, things have been hectic. We have succeeded and will continue to succeed because of you. After so much time, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you so much for your diligent efforts as we continue to care for our patients. Every move you make at our hospital helps us get one step closer towards ending the pandemic.

You are the heart and soul of our institution and we cannot provide the excellent care our patients receive without your efforts. You are integral to us rising above the pandemic and providing the care our community deserves.

Below are a few recent letters from families thanking UHB staff for their unbelievable work with our youngest patients in the NICU. More letters of gratitude to our staff can be found in our Hall of Hope. Please know that our patients and all of us here appreciate your amazing efforts. You are vital to the health and growth of our vibrant community. Be safe and be well.

FROM: Shamone S.

The service that my child received here is excellent and the staff are friendly and ensure that I am properly informed about my child’s health and care. I really appreciate everything you have done for my child. I would have no qualms in recommending friends and family.

FROM: Jazeer’s Mother

Jazeer was born on April 22, 2021 at 2 lbs, 2 oz. Ever since then he has been doing so well. Jazeer was born at 30 weeks and has been taking breast milk since his birth. It’s not a long story so far about Jazeer, but he is doing great to be so young. I like the environment that he’s in. The nurses and doctors are so in tune with him as he progresses over time.

FROM: Jasmin’s Family

We have absolutely nothing negative to say about the whole unit. Our baby boy was well taken care of. They were very professional and answered all our questions. Thank you very much, keep up the good work, and may God bless y’all.

FROM: Danicka B.

The NICU did a great job taking care of my premature baby. They all worked together great. The teamwork is definitely amazing! The nurses were great at communicating with me on the progress of my son and helped me with learning how to breastfeed as a first time mom. Thank you for all the hard work that you do to take care of these precious little babies.

FROM: Aissata A.

First and foremost, thank the almighty God. My husband and I are extremely satisfied with the care Safiyah received from doctors, social workers, and nurses at SUNY Downstate. I’m just so thankful to the group. Your courage, your commitment for treating her as best it gets. Once again, thank you for your hospitality towards us. May the peace, mercy, and blessings of almighty God always be with you guys. Amen!!

June’s Employee of the Month – Mr. Sharad Kumar

sharad_kumarOur employee of the month for June is an extraordinary inter-professional collaborator, Sharad Kumar. Mr. Kumar works in the Hospital Financial Planning (Budgeting) department and was asked if he could temporarily assist the finance department with the workload of two individuals who retired. Without hesitation, Mr. Kumar stepped up and jumped in to help. Although he was unfamiliar with some of the processes that go on in General Accounting, he began to work with department staff and collaborate with them to get the job done.

Mr. Kumar learned new skills in accounting, including preparing journal entries and accruals. He also learned about the position approval process and departmental requests for new positions. In addition, when the Financial Information Department sadly lost an employee to COVID-19, once again, Mr. Kumar was asked to chip in. He helped the department review and prepare monthly reports that were critical to the department and end-users within the hospital.

Sharad Kumar has been an incredibly valuable asset to our organization. Thank you, Sharad, for all that you do for Downstate!

happy independence day
