Purpose of the Handbook

This Handbook was created to give practical guidance to faculty and administrative staff of SUNY Downstate Medical Center in the management of sponsored projects funded by both governmental and private organizations. It is our hope that this will enable faculty and staff to administer and conduct research and other externally funded projects in accordance with University and sponsor policies.

In accepting sponsored project funding, Institution faculty and staff who conduct sponsored projects have an important fiduciary responsibility to manage projects responsibly. This handbook will acquaint new investigators with the research policies and procedures of the Institution and serve as a reference guide for all investigators and administrators.

It should be noted that sponsors policies may be more current than what is written herein. While every attempt will be made to keep this handbook up to date, ultimately the most current information will be found in the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) circulars, as well as other government regulations and sponsor documentation and award documents.

When new policies are identified, we will make every attempt to notify investigators in a timely fashion via updates on our website and/or targeted emails.

In addition to the policies identified herein, the Research Foundation for The State University of New York policies should be consulted if you have additional questions as to what is allowable as it relates to managing your sponsored project.

A complete Handbook is under development.
