Research Report: Ongoing Research Projects

In the year 2017-2018, Drs. Kollmar, Sundaram, Silverman and Stewart continued their work supported by an R21 from the NIDCD studying the restoration of recurrent laryngeal nerve function after injury in a rat model. The team, along with Dr. Sukato was awarded an R03 studying seizure induced laryngospasm in mice.   Dr. Chernichenko continues work on her New York State ECRIP Fellowship Award studying the role of Rho GTPases in perineural invasion in a zebrafish model and Dr. Kollmar is continuing his work studying the molecular genetics of otolith formation in the zebrafish.  Dr. Boruk, in collaboration with the Departments of Medicine and Cell Biology, was awarded 2 FAMRI grants and one NIH grant studying eosinophils for the treatment of sinusitis, the impact of CXCL11 on chronic rhinosinusitis in smokers and transcriptome sequencing of neuronal cell lines from patients with schizophrenia.

Dr. Rosenfeld continued his work with the AAO-HNS, developing a clinical practice guideline on epistaxis, a clinical consensus statement on balloon dilation of the eustachian tube and quality measures for the society.   Drs. Goldstein and Rosenfeld are the lead investigators for a multi-institutional study validating the Clinical Assessment Score-15 (CAS-15) for pediatric sleep-disordered breathing.   Drs. Butts and Alessi are studying the incidence of concussions in facial trauma patients.  Dr. Shulman is working with Department of Pharmacology studying the neuroprotective effects of the novel protease inhibitor gabadur against traumatic brain injury.  Drs. Ballard and Sukato presented their research at the 13th Annual Metropolitan NY Resident Research Day Symposium.  Drs. Tabtabai and Sukato were the recipients of the 2017 Frank E. Lucente Resident Research Grant studying vestibular dysfunction and comorbidities using the NHANES database and seizure-induced laryngospasm in mice, respectively.

Notable publications include Dr. Ballard’s, Dr. Abramowitz’s, Dr. Sukato’s, Dr. Bentsianov’s and Dr. Rosenfeld’s Systematic Review of Voice Outcomes for Injection Laryngoplasty Performed under Local versus General Anesthesia published in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Burr’s, Dr. Reynold’s, Dr. Gitman’s, Dr. Patel’s and Dr. Joseph’s Patterns of Orofacial Clefting in New York City from 1982-2010 published in Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal, Dr. Rosenfeld’s Tonsillectomy for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing or recurrent throat infection in children: summary of AHQR comparative effectiveness review published in JAMA Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and Dr. Sukato’s,  Dr. Ballard’s, Dr. Abramowitz’s, Dr. Rosenfeld’s and Dr. Mlot’s Robotic versus conventional neck dissection in head and neck malignancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
