SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University

School of Health Professions – Midwifery Program

First in Nurse-Midwifery Education • First in ACNM Accredited Midwifery Education

The School of Health Professions (SOHP), formerly known as the College of Health Related Professions (CHRP), was established in 1966 as one of SUNY Downstate's four colleges/schools and approximately 300 full and part-time students are currently enrolled. The nurse-midwifery program was one of CHRP's original academic units. In 1996, the program was the first program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives to accept students with other than a nursing background.

The Midwifery Program of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is proud to have been one of the initial educational programs of the School of Health Professions (SOHP). The Midwifery Program traces its roots to the earliest formal educational program for midwives in the United States that opened in 1932. Since 1974, the Program has been housed in CHRP, now called SOHP. It is known nationally for its strong clinical education, high standards, innovation, and diversity. In 1996, the program was the first in the nation to accept students with backgrounds other than nursing into one integrated program that prepares both Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) and Certified Midwives (CMs), who learn together and practice identically
