Experience:

Professor Lichtman's main commitment has been to midwifery education. She has taught midwifery at Columbia University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She also directed both midwifery educational programs. Despite her primary commitment to education, Professor Lichtman has always practiced midwifery. In the past she worked clinically at North Central Bronx Hospital, Harlem Hospital Center, Columbia University Student Health Science, the New York State Maternal-Infant Care/Family Planning Projects, and Planned Parenthood of New York. Today she maintains a private practice, largely devoted to well-woman gynecology and has been working for the New York State Maternal Infant Care Fort Greene clinic for the past five years. She provides well-woman gynecology, family planning, antepartum, and postpartum care to underserved women at this clinic. She also precepts Downstate midwifery students in their ambulatory care clinical rotations.

Contributions to the Profession:

Professor Lichtman was inducted into the ACNM fellowship in 2004. She has been Nominating Committee Chair for both national and local ACNM. She has served on the Education Committee for the national ACNM and the Public Relations Committee for the NYC chapter. Professor Lichtman has also served on the ACNM Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion as the representative of the Directors of Midwifery Education, the Task Force on Doctoral Competencies, the Task Force on Masters Competencies, and the Task Force on Re-entry to Practice. Professor Lichtman helped found the Peer Review Committee for the New York City chapter. She has been a Board member of the Caribbean Women's Health Association. Professor Lichtman has published extensively, including the award winning textbook, Gynecology: Well-woman Care with Susan Papera, and the extensive revision of Dr. Guttmacher's Pregnancy, Birth and Family, a collaborative effort with two obstetrician-gynecologists. She has served as an Editorial Consultant to the Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health.

Professor Lichtman has spoken widely at local and national conferences on a variety of topics, mostly relating to well-woman gynecology and midwifery education.

Research

Professor Lichtman's doctoral dissertation was on Psychosocial Factors and Pregnancy Outcome. Findings were presented at the Research Forum at an ACNM Annual Meeting and at Research Day at SUNY Stony Brook. She is currently the Principal Investigator, with Suzanne Schechter, on comparing outcomes between CNM and CM graduates of the SUNY Downstate Midwifery Program and developing a research proposal with two New York City midwives on assessing home birth outcomes in New York.
