Our Department of Emergency Medicine located at the University Hospital of Brooklyn
at Downstate, is a top-of-the-line acute care center, available 24 hours a day for
both adult and pediatric patients. It is a 911 receiving facility providing services
to our community regardless of disability, insurance coverage, or language spoken
(language translators are available 24 hours a day). We are part of a healthcare institution
that offers amenities unique to Brooklyn. The hospital has a multitude of services
such as our transplantation services, high-risk obstetrics, interventional cardiology,
multi-specialty orthopedics, stroke center, interventional radiology and a new Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit. We offer continuous availability for your patient’s radiology
needs such as MRI’s, Cat Scans, and X-rays.
Specially trained staff are available 24 hours a day to care for adult and pediatric
patients with urgent and emergent medical issues. The emergency department has multiple
subspecialties in emergency medicine such as trauma, bedside ultrasound, disaster
medicine, toxicology, pediatrics, and geriatrics, to name a few. Additional specialty
faculty are available to assist in treating patients, for example cardiologists, orthopedic
subspecialists, pediatric subspecialists, psychiatrists, pulmonary medicine specialists,
neurologists, infectious diseases specialists, OB/GYNs, surgeons, hematology/oncologists,
to name a few.
As an academic medical center, Downstate provides a rich learning environment for
medical students, physician assistant students, and residents who rotate from different
specialties through emergency medicine. All our faculty members participate in teaching,
mentoring, and evaluation.
Our emergency department enjoys an excellent reputation among the community physicians
and referring facilities. Referring physicians are encouraged to call our referral
